SAN ANTONIO — A man has been arrested and is facing multiple charges after police say he bought a car using an elderly woman’s credit information.
Austen Lopez, 30, is facing charges of fraud, using the ID of an elderly person and exploitation of the elderly.
San Antonio Police say that the victim, a 74-year-old woman discovered that someone had purchased a car using her information. She told police she went to the dealership after she began receiving car payment statements about a 2019 Audi, valued at $21,000, that she did not buy.
The sales manager at the dealership recognized her name but she told them she definitely did not sign any papers or consent for someone to use her name to sign any papers in regards to the sale.
Police said the suspect told the dealership the woman was a relative and couldn’t sign for herself.
Lopez was arrested by police on Wednesday, with several pieces of incriminating evidence in his possession. Police say he had a state issued ID with his photo on it, but someone else’s name and other information. He also had a check that did not belong to him.
Lopez is now also facing additional charges of forgery and tampering with government documents.
Police believe he is involved in several other crimes with more victims. Because they believe there may be more victims out there, they encourage you to check your credit report.
Police also said that the dealership could be held criminally liable if a partnership is detected between the dealership and the suspect.
This is a developing story.
