Police say the 35-year-old complainant returned fire with his rifle at the three suspects, who were attempting to steal a car from the driveway.
SAN ANTONIO — One of three suspects has been arrested and charged with aggravated robbery following a shooting on the northwest side early Saturday morning.
San Antonio police say 20-year-old Desmond Dillard turned himself into authorities on the day of the shooting which happened around 3:23 a.m. along the 6300 block of Bowman Ridge near De Zavala Road.
Police say the unidentified 35-year-old complainant observed three individuals attempting to steal his car in the driveway on a surveillance video feed. The man armed himself with a rifle and confronted the male suspects.
According to police, at least one of the suspects shot at the rifle-wielding man, hitting him once in the chest. The investigation revealed the complainant fired back at the suspects who ran away, leaving behind the stolen car they arrived in.
The gunshot victim was taken to the hospital initially listed as life-threatening, but he’s since been upgraded to stable, police say.
Police are still searching for the other two suspects.
One neighbor named Larry expressed frustration with the level of crime taking place across the city.
Larry has lived in the Ridge Haven neighborhood since 1998 and never has he witnessed such a large presence of first responders until just days ago.
“You heard all the helicopters and the commotion. From fire trucks to police officers to ambulance to you name it, we saw it,” Larry said. “If you go to commit a crime with a firearm, you better expect to face big boy consequences either from the homeowner or hopefully from the city.”
Dillard remains at the Bexar County jail on a $60,000 bond. He has a pre-hearing set for Jan. 16.
