Man charged with stabbing at San Antonio bus stop after beer dispute turns violent, police say

Police recovered a red box cutter from the suspect’s pocket.

SAN ANTONIO — A man was arrested after an argument over beer lead to a stabbing on the northwest side back in May, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Avelino Lopez was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to an SAPD incident report.

Documents say San Antonio police were called to a cutting in progress at a VIA bus stop located on the 2100 block of Fredericksburg Road around 6 p.m. on May 6.

Police said upon arrival, a man was found with life-threatening stab wounds. The victim was taken to a local hospital.

Witnesses told SAPD that an altercation between Lopez and the victim initially broke out over beer. The verbal altercation then quickly transformed into a physical fight.

At some point during the fight, Lopez came up to the victim and stabbed him with a red knife, according to the incident report. Witnesses also told police Lopez smelled like alcohol.

Investigators said that after the stabbing, Lopez ran onto a nearby bus. Lopez reportedly yelled at the bus driver to “go,” but the driver had already clicked his emergency button and refused to move the bus. The driver also closed the protective window on his driver seat and waited for police.

Lopez was detained by police on scene without further incident.

SAPD recovered a red box cutter from Lopez’s pocket. Police said blood and hair could be seen on the blade.

Lopez was sent to the Bexar County jail.
