Man dead after leading police on chase, firing at officers before crashing in South Dallas, police say

Police say they chased a stolen vehicle Friday afternoon and the driver died after crashing the car in South Dallas.

DALLAS — A man died after he allegedly led police on a chase in a stolen vehicle and fired at officers before crashing the car in South Dallas, officials say.

It happened on 2nd and Metropolitan Avenues in South Dallas. It is known as “the slab.”

“I’ve been over here for 15 years hanging out,”  said Anthony Brown, a Dallas resident. “I’m a local biker over here. This is a biker’s community,”

Brown said the area typically doesn’t see a lot of problems, but he was shocked to see a police presence on Friday.

“I just saw the tape and stuff out of out of the law out here,” said Brown.

Officers told WFAA they saw the stolen vehicle in the 2900 block of W. Camp Wisdom Road shortly before 1 p.m. When police tried to conduct a traffic stop, the car backed into an unoccupied police car and fled, according to a press release.

The car crashed into at least one other vehicle while driving and police began a chase, officials say.

“Yeah, I was shocked because I mean…I’m wondering what’s going on.” said Brown.

Police said the driver fired shots at officers during the chase.

Surveillance video from a business near the slab caught the moment the suspect fled down 2nd Avenue, jumped the curb and crashed into other vehicles. Police said the passenger took off running. Dallas PD arrested that passenger, who was identified Saturday as 17-year-old Miguel Sosa. Sosa’s bond was set at $10,000, jail records show.

The driver was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries. Both police and witnesses said no officers fired their weapons. No officers were injured, but at least one squad car was hit by gunfire, police said.

“Normally, it’s the innocent bystanders that get hurt them, stuff like that, I mean. I’m glad that nobody else got hurt over here,” said Brown.

Brown and his friend, Michael Beans, are thankful but also frustrated. “I mean, you’ve got your little, you know, your little negative stuff going on, but overall this is a good environment,” said Beans, a Dallas resident.

“Every time something like this happens, it’s always people from the outside come over for it to happen. It’s not the people here,” said Brown.

The two are worried that this incident will cause the slab to shut down, so they are lifting it up.

“You want some peace of mind, come to the slab,” said Brown.

“It’s friendly over here. It’s not like what they portray it to be. It’s not like that,” said Beans.

WFAA chopper footage showed multiple Dallas police cars and a crowd of officers appearing to block a portion of Metropolitan Avenue between 2nd Street and a bit past Robert B. Cullum Boulevard.

Chopper footage also showed a Dallas police SWAT vehicle among the cars at the scene and a portion of the streets and multiple cars in a parking lot across from the Domino’s Pizza in the 2100 block of Robert B. Cullum Boulevard blocked off with tape.
