Man dies after crashing into back of big rig and bursting into flames, police say

The driver of the 18-wheeler truck was able to disconnect his truck from the trailer when it caught fire.

SAN ANTONIO — A man is dead in a fiery crash after crashing his truck into the back end of a big rig on the northeast side of town, then bursting into flames, police say.

The crash shut down I-35 for more than five hours while officials worked to investigate the crash and clear the scene.

It happened around 11:11 p.m. on Monday night on I-35 North at O’Connor Road.

Officials tell us that a man driving a silver Ford pickup truck ran into the back of the 18-wheeler, pinning his truck beneath the trailer. The truck burst into flames. Sadly, the man did not make it out in time.

First responders say it took them over an hour to extinguish the fire because the gas fueled the flames.

To prevent additional damage to his big rig, the truck driver disconnected his trailer from the cab of the truck and he is expected to be okay.

The identity of the man killed has not been released.
