Man dies from apparent self-inflicted gunshot in police custody after north-side chase, SAPD says

A man died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot in the back of a patrol car after a chase involving a suspected stolen vehicle, according to police.

SAN ANTONIO — A suspect taken into custody after a brief chase died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound while in a patrol vehicle Thursday afternoon, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

The incident happened around 2 p.m. in the 8300 block of McCullough Avenue, police said.

According to SAPD, officers initially attempted a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle. The suspect then allegedly fled from officers before abandoning the vehicle and running on foot.

Police said the suspect was apprehended, handcuffed and placed in the backseat of a patrol vehicle.

A short time later, an officer checked on the suspect and found him with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, according to SAPD.

Officers began providing medical aid until EMS arrived and the suspect was pronounced dead a short time later, SAPD said.

Authorities said the suspect had two active felony warrants.

The incident remains under investigation.
