LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A man is dead after falling into an empty tanker in the Irish Hill neighborhood on Thursday,

The Louisville Fire Department (LFD) received a report about a man who fell and hit his head in the 1300 block of East Main Street around 2 p.m. An updated dispatch indicated crews were responding to a possible confined space incident.

Crews arrived on scene within four minutes and found the man had fallen into a empty tanker. Fire officials said the vessel held approximately 27,000 liters of pork fat, but was empty with just small amounts of residue when the man fell inside.

“A confined space rescue operation was initiated,” LFD spokesperson Donovan Sims said.

Rescuers were able to extract the man from the vessel in less than 25 minutes.

The man was transported to a local hospital to be treated for his injuries, however Louisville Metro Police (LMPD) said he died in the hospital a short time later.

LMPD’s Homicide Unit is now conducting a death investigation.
