Man facing homelessness dies in fire at vacant Beaumont house

Justice of the Peace Ben Collins says it appeared the man started a fire to stay warm.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A man experiencing homelessness died in a house fire late Tuesday night while trying to stay warm. 

Beaumont Police responded to assist with the fire at 10:26 p.m. in the 3900 block of Usan Street.

After Beaumont Fire Rescue extinguished the flames, they discovered a body inside the home, police spokesperson Haley Morrow said in an update.

Neighbors told Justice of the Peace Ben Collins the vacant house was being used by a person experiencing homelessness. 

Collins said it appeared the man had started a fire to stay warm.

Fire Chief Earl White confirmed the man died in the fire. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The identity of the man has not been determined. Police are investigating the incident.
