Man fatally shot by police after pointing shotgun at officers east of downtown SA, authorities say

According to police, the 41-year-old suspect had a history of disturbance calls in the neighborhood.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police officers shot and killed a man after he pointed a shotgun at them just east of downtown Friday morning, authorities say.

Police Chief William McManus said officers were dispatched to a neighborhood in the 800 block of North Cherry Street where an altercation between three drivers quickly took a deadly turn.

After the altercation, McManus said one of the drivers followed the others up North Cherry Street and got out of his vehicle to confront them. He then walked into his home to grab a shotgun and began firing rounds into the air, according to officials.

“Once that happened, the call came out for SAPD,” the chief said. “We arrived, the suspect pointed the shotgun at the officers and the officers fired.”

It’s unknown how many times the man, an unidentified 41-year-old, was hit.

The other drivers, meanwhile, were taken in for questioning.

According to officials, the man had a history of disturbance calls in the neighborhood.

None of the officers were hurt, McManus said. They’ve each been with the force for about six years. The information, he added, was preliminary and could change as the investigation continues.

This is the 11th shooting involving SAPD uniformed personnel so far this year, and the second such incident resulting in officers shooting a man dead in less than a week.
