Man found dead inside Houston PD patrol vehicle, police say

The man may have been in the car for days, according to police. He is believed to have been homeless.

HOUSTON — The body of a man was found inside a Houston police patrol vehicle Saturday afternoon, according to the Houston Police Department.

The vehicle was parked outside the Houston Recovery Center, located on Chenevert Street next to Highway 59 in downtown.

Police said an officer with HPD’s mental health division went to his patrol vehicle to begin his shift when he found the body in the back seat.

At this time, it is unknown how he got there. Police said it appears he may have been seeking shelter from the weather.

The man may have been in the car for days, according to police. He is believed to have been homeless.

His identity is pending verification.

HPD said the man was never in police custody. Police also said there wasn’t any sort of alarm in the car that would’ve alerted police that someone was in there.
