BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — Back in 2017, four men were arrested after being involved in a drive-by shooting that killed a 4-year-old boy. On Friday, one of the men involved, Quentin Phillips, 31, was found guilty by a Bexar County jury.
On July 19, 2017, minutes before midnight, a drive-by shooting took place where more than 60 shots were fired into an east-side home. Phillips was reportedly the driver of the vehicle from which the shots were fired. Terrell Chase and John Chatman were passengers in the vehicle and allegedly were the ones who fired the shots.
Inside the home was Earl Whitley Jr., Cyntwanisha Marshall, their 4-year-old son D’Earlvion and his older brother. Cyntwanisha was reportedly shot twice in the leg and D’Earlvion was struck by a single bullet while he and his brother were playing a video game, which killed him instantly.
Chase has already been sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the shooting which was reportedly in retaliation for an attack that happened earlier that afternoon which was wronfully attributed to De’Earlvion’s father, Earl.
The punishment phase of Phillips’ trila is set to begin on Tuesday, Dec. 12.
“Gang violence doesn’t just impact people in the gang. The murder of De-Earlvion Whitley, an innocent child, shows the devastating consequences of street gang violence and the importance of ensuring the safety and security of our communities,” said Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales, “Our commitment is to work to prevent such tragedies, hold offenders accountable and provide an environment where every child can grow up without fear.”
