TEMPLE, Texas — The identity of the man responsible for crashing into the Killeen Mall during a police chase and running over multiple people was made public on Sunday.
John Darrel Schultz, 53, of Kempner, Texas, has a criminal history dating back to 2022. According to a Texas court record, Schultz was arrested for driving while intoxicated in Williamson County on Oct. 25, 2022.
He was sentenced to four days in Williamson County Jail on May 30, 2023, according to court records.
On Saturday, Schultz was driving a black truck near the intersection of I-35 and I-14 in Belton. He refused to stop and eventually exited I-14 and drove into the Killeen parking lot and through the front doors of the JC Penney, according to Texas DPS.
A DPS trooper and Killeen Police Officer reportedly ran after Schultz as he drove several hundred yards into the mall, running over multiple people.
Bisi Agunbiade was shopping with her siblings in H&M when events unfolded.
“We just hear loud hear loud noises and then people screaming and shots going off like literally everybody was running we didn’t know what was happening so we just stayed there until we knew what to do, you know.”
Bisi Agunbiade and her siblings were waiting for their mother to arrive at the mall to shop in JC Penney.
“I’m really grateful she wasn’t here though because she has a heart condition and if that happens she just would her heart would have went crazy,” older sister Nisa Agunbiade said. “She would have got real scared so it’s lucky that she wasn’t here because she was supposed to have been there with us, but she didn’t end up coming. She was late as always. But it worked in her favor this time. I’m just praying for anybody that got injured.”
Texas DPS said four people were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from severe to minor. A fifth person took themself to the hospital. Ages reportedly ranged from as young as 6 to 75-years-old.
“We had DPS, Killeen Police Department and three other local agencies, officers that were off duty that were in the Killeen mall that neutralized the suspect and kept him from harming and possibly killing any more people,” Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Bryan Washko said.
The investigation is still ongoing. No other information has been released at this time.
