Man goes on trial in 2023 murder of David Rezentes

Jayveon Johnson, 23, along with three other people tried to rob Rezentes in a drug deal, reportedly shooting him as he tried to run away.

SAN ANTONIO — On Tuesday, 23-year-old Jayveon Johnson, accused in the 2023 murder of 20-year-old David Rezentes, will go before a jury for trial.

Police say Johnson along with three other people tried to rob Rezentes in a drug deal, reportedly shooting him as he tried to run away.

On March 25, 2023, officers showed up to the 3200 block of El Paso Street for a shooting. When police showed up, they found a running car with no one inside and the doors open.

Police then got a call for a person unresponsive on the sidewalk. Officers found Rezentes a block away dead with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Through the investigation, police say they learned Rezentes and his friend set up a drug deal to sell to Johnson and the other suspects.

As Rezentes and his friend waited, police say the suspects tried to rob them at gun point.

Gathering evidence, police say they found video of the suspects shooting at Rezentes as he and his friend tried to run away.

21-year-old Mariah Cabrera and Jonathan Garza were also arrested in this shooting. Angel David Salas was the most recent arrest being made in December.

Last month, Cabrera accepted a plea deal and admitted to her role in the murder.

No date has been set yet for Salas’ and Garza’s trial.

We’ll be following this case.
