Man killed in multi-vehicle crash in Killeen, investigation underway

A 34-year-old man was killed in a multi-vehicle crash in Killeen as police investigate a suspected street race at a busy intersection.

KILLEEN, Texas — The Killeen Police Department is investigating a deadly multi-vehicle crash that killed a 34-year-old man Saturday morning at one of the city’s busiest intersections.

According to the department, officers were dispatched around 8:58 a.m. to the intersection of Stan Schlueter Loop and Central Texas Expressway following reports of a major collision.

The initial investigation suggested a white Ram 3500 and another pickup truck were traveling northbound on Stan Schlueter Loop as witnesses said the two vehicles appeared to race away from a traffic light.

As the vehicles entered the intersection, the Ram struck a black Jeep SUV traveling west on the expressway. The impact caused the Ram to spin and crash into a blue Chevrolet pickup stopped in the southbound left-turn lane, then into a red Honda sedan stopped in the southbound inside lane, police said.

The Ram reportedly tipped onto its passenger side and came to rest against the Chevrolet, which was pushed backward into a black Toyota sedan.

The Jeep and Toyota also collided and came to rest along the northbound curb of Stan Schlueter Loop, according to police.

The driver of the Jeep died at the scene and was pronounced deceased by Justice of the Peace Nicola James, who ordered an autopsy at the Southwest Institute of Forensic Science in Dallas. The victim’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The male driver of the Ram was taken to a hospital by ambulance, and the female driver of the Chevrolet was airlifted to Baylor Scott and White Hospital. The remaining drivers reported no injuries.

The second pickup truck believed to have been traveling alongside the Ram continued northbound and did not stop. Police described the vehicle as a late-model, possibly General Motors pickup that is black or dark in color.

The intersection remained closed for much of the day due to significant oil and fuel spills that required cleanup by City of Killeen crews.
