TYLER, Texas — A man was sentenced to 30 years in prison Tuesday for plotting to stalk, kidnap and kill his ex-girlfriend.
Dustin Yates, 52, entered his plea to conspiracy to commit capital murder while renumeration on July 7. During his sentencing hearing Tuesday, he was sentenced to 30 years based on the plea agreement, according to online judicial records.
Yates and his friend, Brad McKinney, 53, who Yates hired to help him, worked together to stalk and discussed plans to harm or kill Yates’ ex-girlfriend.
In messages on Yate’s phone, Yates would discuss McKinney’s expertise as a sniper and hunter. Yates offered to pay McKinney $650 for his guidance, and McKinney said he would “help in any way I can.” Yates would talk about wanting to find and kill his ex-girlfriend, an arrest affidavit explained.
At one point, Yates said he was going to kill himself; however, McKinney suggested that Yates “take out some filthy people in our country and go down swinging buddy!” McKinney also said “that’s what I would do.”
Yates and McKinney also talked about Yates paying $15,000 for McKinney to film the kidnapping, rape, and death of the woman. They talked about different plans, including pistol-whipping, rental cars, killing and disguises, according to the document.
McKinney already pleaded guilty to the same charge, and he will face sentencing on July 31.
