Man sentenced 35 years for stabbing, killing person at San Antonio bus stop

Officials said Austin Diaz fatally attacked a local homeless man back in 2024 and will now spend the next 35 years behind bars.

SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County judge has sentenced Austin Diaz to 35 years in prison for the tragic murder of Frank Hernandez, a local homeless man, according to authorities.

In May 2024, officials responded to a local bus stop after receiving reports of a stabbing.

Upon arrival, officers found Hernandez lying on the ground with a fatal stab wound to the chest.

During the investigation, authorities were able to compile a slew of surveillance footage showing Diaz following Hernandez down the street near the bus stop where the attack took place.

In addition to the surveillance footage, detectives were given cellphone video from a key witness that confirmed Hernandez was pursued and attacked by Diaz, which reportedly played a crucial role in securing a conviction in the case.

“This tragic incident, particularly involving a victim who had already endured significant hardships, highlights a profound failure of compassion and humanity,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. “Every life matters, and we are committed to combating violence, so that no life is deemed disposable.”
