Man shot by Selma police after disturbance call ‘escalates’, authorities say

No police officers were injured in the incident.

SELMA, Texas — A man was shot by Selma police Wednesday after an hourslong standoff near a neighborhood school, authorities said.

Police were called to the 16800 block of Showdown Path in The Retreat at Retama Park Quadplex Subdivision around 9:30 a.m., for a reported disturbance involving gunfire.

Upon arrival, officers heard multiple gunshot in the area. Witnesses gave investigators a description of the suspect, who was last seen entering a nearby residence. Officers were able to identify the suspect inside a nearby home and believed he was in possession of a firearm. Officers tried to talk with the suspect but he continued to ignore their commands, according to Selma PD.

Authorities said after several hours, the incident “escalated” and the suspect was subsequently shot and taken to the hospital. No other injuries were reported.

Police said the incident occurred near an elementary school, which prompted a multi-agency response.

According to Selma PD, the investigation will be turned over to the Texas Rangers and remains active.
