Man shot during domestic violence incident on San Antonio’s south side faces 2 misdemeanor charges

Eric Campos is charged with deadly conduct and criminal mischief.

SAN ANTONIO — Three days after police say a domestic violence conflict ended in gunfire, we now have fresh information about the man who has been charged in connection with the incident.

Jail records indicate 23-year-old Eric Campos has been charged with two misdemeanors:  deadly conduct and criminal mischief.

Police Chief William McManus said Campos was shot at the end of a pursuit that stretched across the southside Saturday afternoon and ended in the turnaround under I 35 at Southwest Military Drive.

Investigators are still trying to prove what happened to end the conflict with Campos shot in the shoulder.

McManus said the violent series of events began on Ann Arbor Drive off South Zarzamora.

Police said Campos showed up at the home of a former girlfriend and bashed the windshield of a truck he found in the driveway.

When the victim of the attack tried to leave the scene with a coworker who offered her a ride, police said Campos followed them across the southside until both vehicles ended up in one of the busiest intersections in the city, across from South Park Mall, which was crowded with holiday shoppers.

At the time, McManus said police believe Campos may have rammed the car he had been following, and that the driver fired a shot at him to stop the attack.

A police officer who happened to be in the area and saw what was happening also fired a shot, according to McManus.

McManus said “So we’ve got two people firing, a co-worker and an SAPD officer.  The officer was not hurt. The coworker was not hurt. Just the suspect is shot and transported, but we don’t know whose round struck the suspect and that’s all gonna be determined later on down the road.”

Police said the officer will be placed on administrative leave until further notice, while the investigation continues.

Meanwhile, Campos has special conditions to abide by while he is out on bond.

The judge ordered full house arrest with a GPS monitor, no possession of firearms and a no contact order for the victim.

Campos is scheduled to be arraigned on the two misdemeanor charges January 20.
