Man suing CPS Energy and City of San Antonio after his home explodes

Fabian Garcia-Wells was severely injured and had to be airlifted to BAMC.

SAN ANTONIO — Days after an explosion rocked his home and seriously injured him, a man is now suing CPS Energy and the City of San Antonio.

The explosion happened Saturday, May 31 around 9:45 p.m. on Laurel Bend on the far west side of town.

Fabian Garcia-Wells was severely injured and had to be airlifted to BAMC.

Garcia-Wells is now suing CPS Energy and the City of San Antonio for more than $1 million.

The lawsuit alleges the explosion was caused by a natural gas leak, and it was a direct result of CPS Energy’s failure to maintain and inspect their service and its components.

While Garcia-Wells believes the blame mostly goes to CPS Energy, in previous lawsuits related to natural gas explosions and injuries, CPS Energy has blamed the city, claiming they weren’t able to investigate the scene and preserve evidence.

That argument was made in another lawsuit KENS 5 reported on in February from a home explosion four years ago on the east side, which ended in a $109 million dollar payout from CPS Energy.

In fact the same attorney from that lawsuit is representing Garcia-Wells in this lawsuit.

We reached out to CPS Energy about this. They said in a statement, “the safety of our customers and our employees is a top priority for CPS Energy. Customers in the immediate vicinity of this incident were evacuated for their safety, and CPS Energy is providing housing for them until they can safely return home.”

Garcia-Wells has created a GoFundMe if you’d like to help him out with expenses.

This is a developing story.
