Man taken into custody after standoff and shooting at first responders on southwest side

Police say a man who initially called for help later fired a shotgun toward firefighters before surrendering.

SAN ANTONIO — A man is in custody after a late-night standoff on the southwest side of San Antonio that involved gunfire directed at first responders.

According to San Antonio police, the situation began around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday when the man called for help at a home on Kelsey Avenue near New Laredo Highway.

Officers say when they arrived, the man was uncooperative.

Later, firefighters at a nearby station reported the same man was firing a shotgun toward their station, prompting another call to police.

Authorities say the man then ran to a nearby lot on Fenfield Avenue, jumped a fence, threw the shotgun aside and hid behind a bush.

After a short standoff, the man surrendered to officers without further incident.

No injuries were reported.

Detectives are continuing to investigate.
