Man to spend three decades behind bars for murder of San Antonio teenager

A man receives a 30-year sentence for the 2022 murder of a San Antonio teen.

SAN ANTONIO — On Monday, a man was sentenced to three decades in prison for killing a teen in 2022, according to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.

Fernando Gonzalez Canedo, 22, will spend the next 30 years behind bars for fatally shooting 19-year-old Luis Mario Garcia.

According to a press release from the D.A.’s office, San Antonio police were called to the northeast side on December 13 and found Garcia lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds. Garcia was taken to a local hospital where he later died.

Surveillance video obtained by police, showed Canedo in a white vehicle near the scene moments before the shooting and also captured him fleeing the area afterwards.

Officials said Canedo then staged a fake robbery about five miles away, where he claimed he was shot. Investigators then used cell phone data, social media records and DNA evidence to identify Canedo as Garcia’s killer.

Leading the prosecution team was Assistant Criminal District Attorney Madeline Flosi and First Assistant Tamara Strauch with support from Victim Advocate Helen Yruegas and Investigator Albert Lopez.

“This senseless act of violence took the life of Mr. Garcia,” Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said. “Thanks to the dedicated work of law enforcement and prosecutors, we are holding the person responsible accountable. Our office is committed to ensuring that violent offenders face the consequences of their actions.”
