Man tries to help rescue grandmother and mother from east-side house fire, SAFD says

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

SAN ANTONIO — An east-side house fire is under investigation after starting in a front bedroom Sunday evening, San Antonio fire authorities say.

Firefighters were called to the 100 block of Zerrcliff Lane around 6 p.m. for a structure fire.

Fire officials say the fire started in the front corner of the house while two people were inside.

A 27-year-old man arrived after the fire started and attempted to get inside the house to help a 62-year-old woman and 89-year-old woman – whom were identified as his mother and grandmother.

Officials say crews were able to contain the fire to the front bedroom but said majority of the house had sustained smoke damage.

Fire officials say paramedics performed life-saving measures on the 62-year-old woman shortly after finding her, but could not provide a status on her condition. The 89-year-old woman had suffered possible smoke inhalation. And, the man sustained multiple lacerations to his arm so firefighters used a tourniquet on him while at the scene. All three were taken to the local hospital.

Officials described the fire as “atypical.” They say the fire did start in the man’s bedroom in the front corner of the house but the cause remains under investigation.

Fire officials did say the man helped firefighters locate his mother and grandmother and was injured during his various attempts to enter the house.

No other information was provided.
