Man wielding a machete shot and killed by SAPD officer on west side, officials say

The suspect was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

SAN ANTONIO — A man on the west side was shot and killed by a San Antonio Police officer Sunday afternoon.

According to San Antonio Police Chief William McManus, officers responded to an assault in progress around 2:30 p.m. in the 6500 block of Tahoka Boulevard, not far from Pinn Road.

McManus said a 27-year-old man was assaulting his girlfriend when an officer arrived at the residence. The suspect reportedly opened the door slightly but wouldn’t open the door further. The officer then pushed the door open and the suspect fell back into a bed and grabbed a machete. The suspect tried to get up with the machete in his hands when the officer shot him.

The man was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police did not know if the woman suffered any injuries.

McManus said this was not the first time SAPD had responded to the residence. The 27-year-old suspect also had a history of violent offenses including aggravated assault and theft.

SAPD said there was no threat to the public.

The officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative duty pending an investigation of the shooting. McManus said the officer had a little over a year of experience with the police department.

This is the 7th shooting involving an SAPD officer so far this year, and the 4th in this month alone.

This is a developing story.
