Mardi Gras revelers weather the storm as parade rolls through Galveston

Powerful storms moved into Galveston Saturday as thousands of parade-goers lined the streets.

GALVESTON, Texas — Rain began falling in Galveston just as one of Mardi Gras’ biggest parades rolled through downtown Saturday night, but neither the weather nor earlier warnings were enough to derail the celebration.

In a matter of seconds, light winds gave way to steady rainfall along the Strand, where crowds had gathered for the Knights of Momus parade,  the oldest parade of Galveston’s Mardi Gras festivities.

Spectators who had been lining balconies stepped inside as the rain intensified, while others opened umbrellas or slipped on raincoats.

Despite the shifting conditions, the parade pressed on.

Organizers had made it clear earlier that the event would continue, rain or shine, and marching bands and floats kept moving through the streets even as winds picked up and rain began whipping sideways.

Throughout the afternoon, strong winds had been felt across the island, with thunderstorm warnings in effect in the area. By Saturday night, the rain was steadily increasing, and trees swayed as gusts pushed the showers around. Still, there were no announcements of delays or cancellations for the parade or other performances scheduled during the second weekend of Mardi Gras festivities.

Many in the crowd appeared prepared for the storm, having tracked forecasts ahead of time. Others huddled beneath awnings for cover.

“It’s a unique experience. It’s my first time here in Mardi Gras whatsoever,” said Houstonian Chantal Wanden.  “I’m from Europe and my mom is German, so we’re used to Carnival, but Mardi Gras is something completely different, so I wanted to experience it.”

As rain continued to fall and winds remained strong, the sounds of music and celebration carried on through downtown Galveston.
