
TAMPA, Fla. — Maryland football assistant coach Kevin Sumlin was arrested and charged in Florida Saturday morning for allegedly driving under the influence.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, at 12:40 a.m., the 59-year-old Terps coach was pulled over for a suspected DUI on U.S. Route 301 in Tampa. Officers requested Sumlin to take a breathalyzer test at the scene, to which he refused. Police arrested Sumlin and he was booked at the county jail at 2:11 a.m. Police say he was released just before 9 a.m. after posting a $500 bond.
He is charged with a second-degree misdemeanor count of driving under the influence, The charge carries a maximum sentence of 60 days in prison and a maximum fine of $500.
Sumlin is a former Texas A&M head coach. He is currently serving as the associate head coach, co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach for the Terps.
“Maryland Athletics is aware of the incident this past weekend involving football coach Kevin Sumlin. As this is an ongoing investigation, we will have no further comment,” a spokesperson for Maryland football said Monday night.
