ALVORD, Texas — Crews in Wise County responded Wednesday morning to a fatal crash where three people died and nearly a dozen more people were injured, emergency officials told WFAA.
The crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday at U.S. Highway 287 and FM 1655, where a 15-person passenger van occupied by 14 people seemingly rolled over multiple times, according to Wise County officials. According to the initial 911 call, several people were ejected from the van.
Wise County EMS Chief Randall Preuninger said three people died and 11 people were injured (three critical, six serious and two non-serious). Preuninger called the crash a “mass casualty incident” when reached by email.
Three Wise County ambulances and three medical helicopters (one PHI and two Air Evac LifeTeam) transported patients from the scene, Preuninger said in a press release. Bowie EMS also sent an ambulance to the scene for support.
TxDOT said all northbound lanes of U.S. 287 at FM1655 were shut down Wednesday morning.
The accident is being investigated by Texas DPS.
WFAA has sent a crew to the scene to gather more information.
