ALVORD, Texas — Crews in Wise County responded Wednesday morning to a fatal crash where four people died and 10 people were injured, emergency officials told WFAA.
The crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. Wednesday at U.S. Highway 287 and FM 1655, where a 15-person passenger van occupied by 14 people seemingly rolled over multiple times, according to Wise County officials. According to the initial 911 call, several people were ejected from the van.
All of the 14 involved are adults, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Preuninger called the crash a “mass casualty incident” when reached by email.
Three Wise County ambulances and three medical helicopters (one PHI and two Air Evac LifeTeam) transported patients from the scene, Preuninger said in a press release. Bowie EMS also sent an ambulance to the scene for support.
TxDOT said all northbound lanes of U.S. 287 at FM1655 were shut down Wednesday morning.
The accident is being investigated by Texas DPS.
In an update from Texas DPS Wednesday morning, a spokesperson said only one person in the van was wearing a seat belt and that person survived the crash. The DPS spokesperson also said the driver was one of the people who died. The van was coming from Florida, but it was unclear where they were headed to, Texas DPS said.
WFAA has sent a crew to the scene to gather more information.
