Mayor Nirenberg announces his next role after leaving office

San Antonio’s mayor, Ron Nirenberg, will return to Trinity University as a professor of communication.

SAN ANTONIO — Now that San Antonio has narrowed down the candidates for mayor to two possibilities, the outgoing mayor is announcing his next steps.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg is heading back to where his leadership journey first began, Trinity University. The school announced he has been named the Calgaard Distinguished Professor of Practice. The role is named after former Trinity University President Ronald K. Calgaard.

Nirenberg will teach in the upcoming school year in the Department of Communication. He graduated Trinity in 1999 with a degree in communications.

“We are pleased to welcome Mayor Nirenberg back to Trinity,” said Trinity University President Vanessa B. Beasley, Ph.D. “As an alumnus who has dedicated his life to public service and leadership, Ron embodies the values of civic engagement and thoughtful communication that we instill in our students.”

Nirenberg has been mayor of San Antonio since 2017 and will leave office this year. He served four terms of two years each, the maximum allowed under city rules.

He said in a statement he hopes his experience leading the city will help him inspire the students he now gets to teach.

“I’m honored to return to Trinity this coming year,” Nirenberg said. “My time as a student here shaped who I am as a leader, and I’m eager to give back to the institution that helped launch my career. I look forward to engaging with students and faculty as we explore the ways communication, public policy, and leadership intersect to shape our communities.”

His 12-month renewable contract begins on August 1, 2025.

Saturday, San Antonians narrowed down the crowded field of candidates vying to take his place to two people. Gina Ortiz Jones and Rolando Pablos were the top two vote-getters and will face off in runoff election on June 7.
