Part of the reason is because the state passed a bill, Senate Bill 8, that requires law enforcement to cooperate with federal authorities. That was brought up by the chief who stated there are expensive consequences if they don’t abide by that law.
As for concerns about people impersonating ICE agents, here’s what Chief William McManus had to say:
“If they don’t have identification or that a that shows that they are federal law enforcement agency, the we wouldn’t allow them to and officers folks that they’re trying to detain or or supposedly arrest,” said Chief McManus. “But you know, they’ve got to have a matter of fact, somebody sent me a picture of three. I guess they were ICE agents. And the one guy was not appropriately attired and identified him as an ICE agent. And I called up the special agent in charge of his, and I reported that to him. He said that he would take care of that.”
The question is what can we do.
The mayor said speaking up, telling stories, elections, and following the law as best as they can.
