Meet Ric Galvan, one of the youngest in SA history to be elected to City Council

Born and raised in District 6, Councilman-elect Ric Galvan will serve on City Council for the next four years. He lays out his top priorities.

SAN ANTONIO — Ric Galvan is set to become one of the youngest people ever elected to San Antonio’s City Council. At 24-years-old Galvan and other council members will be sworn in on Wednesday.

Galvan is one of San Antonio’s own. He was born and raised in District 6, which he will be serving for the next four years.

KENS 5 spoke with Galvan extensively at one of his favorite restaurants in the district Taco Jalisco located off Culebra near Loop 410.

“District 6 is home at the end of the day,” Galvan said. “The entire reason I ran because the city is growing, the District 6 we are seeing grow out.”

District 6 is pretty large from the inner city all the way to the far west side past 1604.

“It’s not a divided district, just a bit different,” he said. “Different communities, different needs but we are all one united district, including the Marbach area.”

In the recent runoff election between Galvan and Kelly Ann Gonzalez, Galvan won by just 25 votes.

“Every vote always counts,” he said. “Never forget about your local elections, because you can make a difference.”

As for the people that didn’t for Galvan, he said his message is the same since day one.

“This council office is not just mine, it is all of ours,” he said. “This seat is supposed to represent everybody in our district.”

Galvan is no stranger to City Hall. He worked in the District 5 office as director of special projects.  He also served as the president of the Piper Meadow Neighborhood Association.

Galvan also now joins former Councilman Rey Saldaña as one of the youngest people ever elected to serve on San Antonio’s City Council.

“I’m not going to say I have every single life experience with 24 years of life,” he said. “I think San Antonio has a good record of sending folks who are young to elected positions of power… They like to see folks who have the energy and are willing to do the hard work to get things done.”

His top priorities include affordable housing, sustainable growth and infrastructure improvements.

“I think one of the biggest things is always going to be infrastructure,” he said. “There is a lack of basic infrastructure needs in certain parts of the district, sidewalks, drainage street repairs, things like that.”

A full interview with Galvan, including his thoughts on Project Marvel is streaming now on KENS 5+.
