More than 135,000 flags are already placed at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in the tradition to honor service and sacrifice.

Fort Sam Houston will be hosting a ceremony which begins at 9:30 am.

The Navy JROTC from Southwest Legacy High School will provide the color guard, and Congressmen Henry Cuellar will be the keynote speaker.

At McAllister park, there will be a ruck march and those participating will be carrying weighted backpacks or rucksacks in remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

The march will end with a flag folding ceremony to honor those we’ve lost. The march starts at 10 a.m. and will end at noon.

And with the national holiday, city hall and most municipal offices will be closed in observance.

Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday.

The hosts of these events hope that people remember this is more than a holiday for barbecuing, but rather a solemn holiday.
