Some Texas travelers will enjoy lower Memorial Day gas prices than last year, but which areas are actually above the state average per gallon?
SAN ANTONIO — Plenty of travelers are set to be on the move this Memorial Day weekend.
Whether you’re on your way in or on your way out of the state, here are the cheapest gas prices in Texas and how they compare to last year.
The good news: Memorial Day weekend commuters will have a little more left in their wallet after hitting the pump. Over the holiday weekend in 2024, the average gas prices across Texas were almost 40 cents more per gallon. In fact, AAA Texas says Memorial Day gas prices haven’t been this low since 2021.
Currently, the state average is sitting at $2.78 for a gallon of regular gas. Officials with AAA Texas say 3.2 million Texans are expected to travel on the road this weekend—that would be a record.
Regardless of where you go in Texas, you’re paying much less than the national average, which as of Friday was $3.19 for a gallon of unleaded.
“Supply and demand are playing a role in this year’s lower pump prices as crude oil supply is currently surpassing demand,” said Daniel Armbruster, spokesperson for AAA Texas.
Waco and Lubbock tout some of the lowest gas prices in the state this weekend, while DFW stations are nearing $3 for a gallon of regular.
The following graph from AAA Texas shows the current average for all grades of gas and diesel across the state:

San Antonio – Bexar County
Across the San Antonio and Bexar County areas, gas prices are lower than the the state average in all grades of gas and diesel. But not by much.
For regular gas, people traveling through the Alamo City will be paying, on average, around $2.73 per gallon.
For diesel, the average price is about 39 cents less than the state average, sitting at around $3.05 per gallon.
Austin – San Marcos
People traveling in the area of Texas’ capital city will be paying just a little more than the state average in diesel, but still less in regular gas.
The current average prices for Austin and San Marcos are $2.76 for regular gas and $3.10 for diesel. That’s just over a cent more per gallon than other travelers will see across the state on average.
Houston – Harris County
Travelers having to go through Southeast Texas have the cheapest route on this list, as both gas and diesel prices come out to less than the state and metro averages.
In Houston, a gallon of regular gas on Memorial Day weekend will average around $2.70 and a gallon of diesel will cost you $3.04.
Dallas
Following the least expensive gas prices in the state is the most expensive place to be traveling on Memorial Day weekend.
Dallas-area gas stations are offering prices a full 15 cents more per gallon of regular than the state average and 4 cents more for diesel.
On average, regular gas in the Dallas area cost $2.92 on Friday, with diesel coming out to $3.13 per gallon.
El Paso
People traveling through El Paso will also pay slightly more than the state average this holiday weekend.
For regular gas in El Paso, travelers can expect to pay about $2.84 per gallon. The average cost per gallon of diesel in El Paso, meanwhile, will be $3.08, which is right in line with the state average.
