
The event, open to the public, will take place Thursday evening at the Carver Community Center.
SAN ANTONIO — In honor of the late Flaco Jimenez who passed away on July 31, a memorial service has been planned for the legendary conjunto musician.
Jimenez’s family and friends have invited the public to the Thursday event to celebrate the Grammy winner’s career, legacy and memory. It will feature a prayer service and speeches made by longtime friends and fans. The tribute will end with a performance by Los Texmaniacs and some special guests.
The memorial service is scheduled to run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Carver Community Center, located at 226 N. Hackberry St.
The schedule is subject to change, but the plan is:
- 5:30 p.m.: Doors open, slide show and recorded music
- 6:05 p.m.: Welcome by host
- 6:10 p.m.: Prayer by Deacon Adam Garza of David Lee Garza y Los Musicales
- 6:15 p.m.: Speakers
- 7:40 p.m.: Los Texmaniacs
- 9 p.m.: Event ends
Jimenez, who died at the age of 86, was a trailblazer of conjunto and Tejano music with influence that spanned generations. He continued to perform well into his 80s, including at San Antonio’s annual Tejano Conjunto Festival.
“He was the greatest ambassador of music worldwide,” said Cristina Ballí, executive director of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, where an exhibit exploring Jimenez’s legacy is currently on display. “Really, nobody else in music was able to take this music to Europe, to Asia, and to create fans of the music over there.”
