Metro Health hosted pop up vaccination clinic in San Antonio

With 146 cases of measles in the state, and one confirmed exposure in San Antonio, many came to make sure they were protected.

SAN ANTONIO — Metro Health hosted a pop up vaccination clinic Saturday, that had people in line for several hours.

Among the vaccines given, was the MMR vaccine which the public health agency states is 97 percent effective against measles. With 146 cases of measles in the state, and one confirmed exposure, many came to make sure they were protected.

“My husband, dialysis patient and, I try to, I’m going to cry, I try not to bring any germs or anything, and I just want to be up-to-date with the shots so he doesn’t get sick, because that’s my priority, him,” said Margarita Pizana, who had waited about two hours in line.

The pop-up was hosted at the Cortez Library on the south side.  Metro Health is keeping a close watch on the west side and the south side due to its lack of providers and number of uninsured and underinsured population.

Many showed up to do their part.

“It’s scary. Not so much for me, but for the younger ones” said Teresa Vigueroa. “There’s a lot of parents. They don’t get their shots for the kids. They don’t want to be out here waiting or whatever. As soon as we hear that they’re going to give out the shots for any time we’re down here.”

Those with underlying health conditions, pregnant women and children under five years old are all at risk for complications from measles.

“I know I’m doing my part, at least to have some, like, peace about everything,” said Sarah Stain who was in line with her 6-year old daughter. “Relief. To have her , but also for the other kids in her class and whoever she’s around. And then I also have a ten year old, so I know that affects them, too.”

Metro Health is hosting their next pop up on March 7th, at the Gathering Place.
