The Newport News native and former NFL superstar is considering a move to the Spartans.
NORFOLK, Va. — When it comes to football in the 757, there aren’t many bigger names than Michael Vick. A star quarterback at Warwick High School and then Virginia Tech, Vick went number 1 overall in the 2001 NFL Draft.
Arguably one of the most talented former NFL players known for his speed and elusive style of play with the Atlanta Falcons, Vick’s career was derailed for several seasons after he was convicted and sentenced to nearly two years in prison for running a dogfighting ring in Virginia. He would later return to play for the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as brief stints with the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Since his playing career ended, Vick has worked in media, most recently for Fox Sports. Vick has also maintained ties in Hampton Roads, returning for camps and events over the years.
Those hometown visits may become a lot more frequent in the near future.
Sources close to Vick confirmed to 13News Now that he is in talks to become the next head football coach at Norfolk State University.
Michael Vick said via his publicist that he’d be honored to be a coach for Norfolk State, “I am truly grateful for the consideration, as it would be an honor to be the head coach at one of the nation’s Top 20 HBCUs, especially home in the 757. Other than the fact that I am going through the necessary processes, there is nothing further to share right now.”
The Spartans parted ways with Dawson Odums after the 2024 season, beginning a nationwide search for a new coach.
Vick would follow recent former NFL stars who joined the college coaching ranks, like Deion Sanders and Eddie George.
