MILLINOCKET, Maine — The body of a missing hiker was discovered on Katahdin Tuesday afternoon during a search for him and his daughter, who park officials say is still missing.
The pair had apparently last been seen near the summit on Sunday.
Tim Keiderling, 58, and Esther Keiderling, 28, are both from Ulster Park, New York, and left Abol Campground on Sunday with the plan to hike to the Katahdin summit, according to park officials.
They were last seen at about 10:15 a.m. hiking toward the summit near Katahdin Tablelands. Summit temperatures were estimated to be as low as the mid-30s Sunday night.
By Monday, park rangers observed that their vehicle was still parked in the day-use lot, and there was no sign of the father and daughter.
Park rangers began their search focused on the Abol Trail and Hunt Trail on Monday but expanded their search area by Tuesday with help from more than two dozen game wardens from the Maine Warden Service Search and Rescue Team and trained dog teams.
In an update on Tuesday, park officials said on social media that a Maine Warden Service K9 search team had found the body of Tim Keiderling on the Tableland, near the summit, around 2:45 p.m.
Esther Keiderling has not been found, and search efforts are still underway.
Wednesday is expected to be sunny with summit highs in the lower 60s, with temperatures rising into the 80s at lower elevations.
The Maine Forest Service and the Maine Army National Guard are also assisting in the search by air, with several helicopters deployed.
Park officials ask that anyone who was on or around the Katahdin summit on Sunday between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. or may have information to contact the Houlton State Police at 207-532-5400.
