MNPD: 2 students dead, including shooter, 2 more injured after shooting at Antioch High School

Metro Nashville PD said the fourth student received a facial injury during the shooting, but he was not shot.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Update (3:35 p.m.): The Metro Nashville Police Department provided more information into the shooting at Antioch High School. 

Police said another person was injured during the shooting. MNPD said a male student received a facial injury after he fell but was not shot. 

Nashville Chief of Police John Drake said the 17-year-old shooter entered the cafeteria when he fired multiple rounds, fatally striking a 16-year-old girl. Another 17-year-old student was grazed by a bullet and has since been released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Drake said.

“This is a heartbreaking day for the entire Antioch High School community,” Metro Public Schools Director Dr. Adrienne Battle said. “My heart goes out to these families as they face an unimaginable loss.”

Battle continued to speak on the safety measures the school implemented, such as partnering with MNPD in hiring school resource officers and installing security camera’s with weapon detection software. However, she said, “Unfortunately these measures were not enough to stop this tragedy.”

Battle then announced that Antioch will be closed for the rest of the week as students and staff to grieve.

Next of kin is being notified. The investigation is ongoing.

A school shooter killed one student and wounded another before turning the gun on himself at Antioch High School in the Nashville area Wednesday morning, according to emergency officials. 

A public information officer with the Metro Nashville Police Department confirmed the 17-year-old shooter died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. One of the female victims was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she died, and another is reportedly “stable” after a bullet grazed his arm.

Police have not identified the shooter or victims as of their 2 p.m. press conference.

The shooting happened in the cafeteria, according to WSMV. Metro Nashville PD said the shooter shot two students and then shot himself.

MNPD said there is a reunification site for parents and their children. Metro Nashville Public Schools said students will be taken to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital (3754 Murfreesboro Pike) by bus including car riders.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation sent HELP trucks to assist with traffic control in response to the shooting.

Metro Nashville Public Schools provided the following statement:

Families and community: Antioch High School is on a lockdown due to shots being fired inside the school building. Metro Police are on the scene. The person responsible for shooting is no longer a threat. We will be gathering students in the auditorium and will provide information on reunification as soon as possible.

This is an active crime scene and investigation. We will work with the MNPD to provide further updates as they become available.
