More disturbing details unfold in case where a decomposing body was found inside a mobile home in far south Bexar County

“Go big or go home” were the words allegedly uttered from Charles Byrd when he was questioned by BCSO about the decomposing body found in his mobile home.

SAN ANTONIO — Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar says 49-year-old Charles Byrd told deputies about a fight between him and his wife that took place June 16 that he believes led to her death. Sunday night he was booked into the Bexar County Jail on tampering evidence with intent to impair a human corpse charge.

“He was asked what his end game was, in other words did he think he was going to get away with this,” Salazar said. “He described to us that he felt pretty certain that he was going to get caught as a result of it he was trying to prolong the process as long as he could.”

Sheriff Salazar says the body found in Byrd’s mobile home on Pleasonton Road was there for more than a month.

“Once deputies got into the home they very quickly smelled the distinct odor of decomposition of a body,” he said. “They were able to get into a portion of the home where they realized what they were seeing was most likely human remains wrapped up in materials.”

The discovery was made early Sunday morning, sparked by concern from a relative.

The sheriff says Byrd tried masking the odor of the body with carpet, blankets and trash bags. Investigators believe that body is his wife.

“Charles had made some comments to this relative that he may have done something to Angela which led to her death,” Salazar said. “He made a very flippant comment to the effect of, ‘Go big or go home’ being his first time committing a crime, I just found that very, very shocking.”

What the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is waiting for now is for the medical examiner to confirm the identity of the body and determine a manner of death – if it is ruled a homicide – BCSO says Byrd will face a murder charge.
