More than 500 gallons of chemicals inside industrial building that erupted in flames, SAFD says

Crews were called around 11:45 a.m.

SAN ANTONIO — Dozens of San Antonio fire crews responded to an industrial fire on the north side just before noon Monday.

Firefighters were called to the the 3600 block of Highpoint Street near the San Antonio International Airport around 11:45 a.m.

Woody Woodward with the San Antonio Fire Department said the fire started within a business called MT Texas that manufactures and refurbishes airplane parts.

Woodward said there were “lots of variables” for firefighters battling the blaze like chemicals being onsite – including 500 gallons of sodium hydroxide and 500 gallons of hydrochloric acid.

A second alarm was called but some of the units were cancelled after fire crews were able to dilute the chemicals with water and contain the fire to the one business, according to SAFD.

Officials say there is no danger to the public but fire crews and hazmat teams will monitor the scene until a remedial team arrives to take over the cleanup.

All of the workers were able to evacuate safely and no injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire will be under investigation but Woodward said it will depend on the condition of the building.

No other information was provided.
