Mother and daughter killed in train crash in Honey Island, DPS says

HONEY ISLAND, Texas — A mother and daughter were killed Tuesday afternoon after a train struck a pickup truck at a railway crossing in Honey Island, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The crash happened around 1:40 p.m. at the railway intersection on Woods Lane, just off FM Highway 1293 in Kountze. A 2008 Dodge pickup truck was traveling south on Woods Lane when it attempted to cross the tracks and was struck by an eastbound train, DPS said in a news release.

The driver, identified by family as 47-year-old Kimberly Creel of Kountze, and her daughter, 27-year-old Kimberly Shawnea Carver, were both pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Rod Ousley.

The conductor of the train and one other passenger were not injured.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is leading the investigation. First responders from the Hardin County Sheriff’s Office also assisted with traffic at the scene.

According to records on openrailwaymap.org, the tracks are owned by BNSF Railway. The intersection did not have crossing arms to stop vehicles when a train is approaching.

This remains an ongoing investigation, and no further details have been released at this time.
