Investigators arrested Ruben Cantu for allegedly killing Ricky Marquez outside a bar in February.
SAN ANTONIO — It has been two months since a father of three was shot and killed outside a south-side bar. Just within the past week, investigators have made an arrest.
Back on Feb. 2, two people were shot outside Papi Gallo Cantina off Commercial Avenue. 42-year-old Ricky Marquez died at the scene.
Ruben Cantu was arrested Friday for allegedly killing Marquez. According to the arrest warrant, Cantu was cut off at the bar and kicked out. The warrant states regulars at the bar helped the staff escort Cantu out.
Once he was outside, that is when a fight broke out. At some point, police said Cantu fired off several shots, hitting two people. The other victim survived his injuries.
Cantu took off. However, with multiple witnesses and surveillance videos, investigators eventually caught up to him.
According to the warrant, following the shooting, Cantu had threatened a different person and told that person, “last week, I killed someone.” The warrant states he specifically said it happened at El Gallo.
Marquez’s mother Francis Vasquez said she is still processing that her first-born son is gone.
“I just couldn’t believe my son was gone,” Vasquez said. “He was a nice person, loving.”
Cantu is facing both a murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge. He remains in the Bexar County Jail with bonds totaling more than $300,000.
“I will not be happy until the judge throws the book at him,” Vasquez said.
