Mother of murdered local former TV account executive speaks out as accused killer enters plea deal

SAN ANTONIO — The man accused of killing a local former TV account executive has entered into a plea deal.

Sebastian Hernandez was in front of a judge on Monday and pleaded no contest in the murder of Chris Olivarez. The victim’s mother Mary Coronado said it was overwhelming being in the courtroom.

“It felt like an emotional roller coaster,” Coronado said. “It felt like a mixture, tension, frustration. It is so painful knowing that he’s in the same room, knowing that he is out there. It doesn’t feel right.”

On Monday morning, Hernandez pleaded no contest for the murder of Olivarez. He is not admitting guilt, but is accepting the punishment for the crime.

In 2021, investigators said Hernandez stabbed Olivarez to death at his home. Police said Hernandez’s DNA was found on the murder weapon.

“It felt like a wave of disappointment,“ Coronado said. “It doesn’t feel like a true justice is what I can say.”

Coronado said these last few years have been difficult for her and the family.

“It really has changed our lives dramatically without him being here,” the mom said. “The pain in my heart never goes away.”

Inside the family home there is a memorial of her caring son. She said she misses his smile and said he was always happy and full of life.

“He was vibrant and had something special, and magic,” she said. “And could fill a room with his personality.”

Coronado said she misses his hugs and hearing her son saying “I love you.” Despite having to move forward in life, this mother’s memories will never go away.

“He will never be forgotten,” she said.

The family said the sentencing will be on October 1. Hernandez faces up to 32 years in prison. Coronado said she wants the judge to give him the maximum sentence.
