Lily Bao Do, 28, has been charged in connection with Erica Garza’s death, according to the Austin Police Department.
AUSTIN, Texas — Days after a driver was arrested in connection to a deadly hit-and-run, the mother of the 20-year-old who was killed is focusing on making sure her daughter’s death wasn’t in vain.
Erica Garza died on May 16 after she suffered severe injuries from the crash, including brain trauma. Christina Ibarra couldn’t hold back tears as she detailed the moment she found out Garza was in the hospital and learned her daughter wouldn’t survive.
According to Austin Police Department (APD) officials, Garza was among three people injured in a crash on May 11 – Mother’s Day – at around 5 a.m. Lily Bao Do, 28, has been charged in the case.
Ibarra said one of the others injured was Garza’s boyfriend.
“[Do] didn’t even stop to help Erica – she just left her on this side of the road and just took off,” Ibarra said. “Who does that? Would type of human does that do another human? That is my baby.”
Ibarra described Garza as “the best daughter ever” and her whole world. Garza was working two jobs and was looking into going back to school.
“She was so loved by us and by other people,” Ibarra said.
Ibarra said even though Do turned herself into police, she doesn’t forgive her and believes Do should face a harsher punishment.
Do is charged with with Collision Involving Death and Collision Involving Injury, which is tied to her leaving the scene. KVUE reached out to APD on Thursday about additional charges, but officials said there were no further charges pending.
A benefit will be held on Saturday, May 24, at 12 p.m. to help cover funeral expenses for Garza. It will be hosted at 803 Vargas Road in Austin.
