AUSTIN, Texas — Every week on KVUE Daybreak, we feature children of all ages in the foster care system, in the hopes of helping them get adopted by a forever family. Each week, we meet a child at a Central Texas business related to their interests.
On a warm September morning in Austin, it was the perfect day for some indoor mini golf at Dirdie Birdie in The Domain. It’s not your average putt-putt course. It’s a large, vibrant space, serving up food and drinks alongside an interactive course featuring miniature, Austin-themed attractions.
Amidst the sounds of cheers and the gentle clatter of golf balls, we had the pleasure of meeting Sadie, a bubbly 12-year-old girl in Texas foster care. She has a big personality and a wide range of interests.
Sadie is an athlete, playing both volleyball and basketball at school. But her interests don’t stop there. She’s also joined FFA (Future Farmers of America) and is excited about the prospect of showing a lamb this year.
“I don’t really know the process of it ’cause I’ve only shown rabbits, but the lady told me that it’s kind of the same thing. Like, they’ll judge how good it acts, how behaved it is,” Sadie shared, her eyes full of curiosity and determination.
Beyond her hobbies, Sadie has a warm presence and a deep desire for connection. Building friendships and close relationships is important to her, and she’s looking for a family who will take the time to talk with her.
“If there’s something going on at school, or like, if I’m upset or if I need help with stuff,” she explained, highlighting her need for emotional support and open communication.
When asked what else we should know about her, Sadie’s ambitions poured out.
“I want to be a singer-songwriter, and I want to learn how to cook,” she said. “And I want to be like, a nurse too. I want to be one for the hospitals, like the children’s hospital.”
Sadie’s big heart and even bigger dreams make her a truly special person.

KVUE launched the Forever Families segment with Partnerships for Children (PFC) in June 2020 to highlight children in the Heart Gallery of Central Texas who need secure and permanent families. Every day, there are nearly 1,000 children waiting to get adopted in Central Texas, according to PFC.
Editor’s note: The children who are in the Heart Gallery program and featured in KVUE’s Forever Families segments are children who have had every effort made on their behalf to connect them with family or others in their community to provide options for permanent, adoptive homes. Through no fault of their own, that hasn’t happened yet, and so in partnership with the Department of Family and Protective Services, we collaborate to bring awareness to KVUE viewers about these children in the hopes of finding them permanency before they age out.
