Dominique Croom faces up to life in prison once he’s sentenced.
SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County jury on Friday convicted Dominique Croom of murdering a San Antonio Uber driver in 2023, according to online court records.
Croom, 33, was arrested on March 16, 2023, amid an investigation into the shooting death of 37-year-old Robert Carbonell Diaz days prior on the northeast side. Authorities responded to the 5900 block of Gibbs-Sprawl Road the evening of March 9, where witnesses said they “heard several shots” and found a man running from the victim’s car.
According to arrest records, one person told authorities he was pumping gas when he heard the gunfire before seeing a Lincoln Navigator SUV driving in the wrong direction and over a sidewalk before stopping in a field. Diaz was taken to a hospital but died shortly after.
Inside the car, investigators found “multiple spent (gun) casings” and Diaz’s phone “actively mapping an uncompleted Uber ride,” an arrest affidavit states.
Croom’s name matched the passenger identity provided for the Uber ride, authorities said. That evidence, along with video surveillance footage capturing him fleeing the scene of the shooting, led to his arrest a week after the killing.
Court records indicate Croom pleaded not guilty before the jury convicted him. He is expected to be sentenced in March and faces the possibility of life in prison.
