CLEVELAND — An investigation is underway after two houses caught fire Friday morning on Sacramento Avenue near West 139th Street in Cleveland.
According to Cleveland Fire, crews responded to a two-alarm blaze with a “heavy volume of fire and downed power lines.”
Both of the fires are now under control.
Officials report that two adults and three children have been displaced, with damages totaling $170,000. In a second home affected by the initial fire, two adults were displaced and the estimated damage is $10,000.
3News also learned that four people were in the home at the time of the fire. A 16-year-old neighbor helped rescue the residents with a ladder. No injuries were reported.
“Great job by neighbor Tyler Sowden, 16, who saw the fire from his house, brought a ladder to the scene and rescued the mother, young boy and baby girl from 2nd floor porch roof,” said Cleveland Fire in a post on X.
Tyler spoke to 3News following the rescue.
“I was in my house. There was a kid screaming help and I took the ladder off of the garage,” he explained. “I walked down the street with the ladder, put it on the house and saved three kids and a mom.”
Tyler said one of the three kids had jumped out of the house when he tried to save him.
“It was hot. It was scary. I just wasn’t thinking though, I just didn’t really care,” he added.
In addition, Cleveland police officers James Bellomy and Kerry Adams rescued an elderly neighbor and his dog.
The American Red Cross is assisting all displaced residents.
At this time, the cause of the fire is under investigation.
