Neighbors mourn 61-year-old man killed in west-side house fire

Authorities said the physically disabled man died at the scene. His identity has not been revealed.

SAN ANTONIO — Candles and Ojos de Dios guard the house that went up in flames on Montezuma Street, killing a 61-year-old disabled man.

Loved ones prayed outside the house for the man they lost only hours ago.

It all began when authorities were called to the 1000 block of Montezuma Street for a structure fire just before 3 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Officials said the fire started from the center of the home and that they heard one person inside when they were on scene. Authorities say there were issues with a “downed power line and carport that was partially collapsed.”

“I knew he was in there too long…too much smoke,” a neighbor who attempted to save the man told KENS 5.

He and a few other people tried to get through a side window where they had heard the man yelling from. SAPD directed fire crews to that window but it was too late when they made it inside.

Fire officials said it took 15 minutes to put the fire out.

“I was scared…I could feel the heat and the flames started getting bigger and all this black smoke everywhere,” a neighbor told KENS 5.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown, but arson is investigating.

The house is a complete loss.

This is a developing story and KENS 5 will continue this article as we learn more.
