Neighbors react to deadly road-rage shooting on the northwest side

SAN ANTONIO — Around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, SAPD responded to the 6700 block of Spring Hurst Drive after receiving reports of a shooting at a nearby bus stop on the northwest side.

A 41-year-old man identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner as Jay Morales, was found lying on the street with multiple gunshot wounds.

That injured man was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.

Residents like Jose Garcia say he’s never seen anything like this in his neighborhood.

“When I heard the shooting, I ran to the window to see what happened and there is this guy laying on the floor,” Garcia said. “And then there is another guy behind him. This little car behind, walking around and saying, ‘Oh, you tried to shoot me! You tried to kill me first!’”

Police say this all started with an altercation on the road nearby – that’s when two drivers pulled in to a neighborhood at Spring Time and Spring Hurst Drive.

The first driver stopped his vehicle, opened his trunk and pulled out a gun. Police say the second driver saw that gun, pulled his own weapon and shot the first driver, hitting him several times.

“My two little daughters saw that,” Garcia said. “They haven’t said anything but that’s not something they would enjoy you know?”

Police tell us driver who fired is cooperating with the investigation. Right now it is unclear what charges, if any, he will face.

Police initially said that he acted in self-defense.

SAPD says the investigation is ongoing.
