WINDCREST, Texas — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.
This week’s Forgotten Friend is Neiko, a Terrier mix who ended up at Windcrest Animal Care & Control after being found as a stray back in April.
“Neiko was running at large with no owner to claim her when we found her,” said Mike Carrillo, Windcrest Animal Care & Control.

She gets along great with other dogs and loves being around kids, but the shelter is not too sure about cats. She has never been around any… at least that they know of.
“Neiko has never been aggressive towards any other dogs,” said shelter staff. “Neiko has been to our ‘dog bark’ and she has never been aggressive with any of the dogs there.”
She is very active and would make someone a terrific running buddy. Shelter staff also say she is a “passenger princess,” loving to go for car rides whenever she gets the chance.
“She just loves attention and wants to be friends with everyone,” said shelter staff. “But she can be little independent and wander off on her own accord.”
Because of that, she probably needs a home with a fenced-in yard. That would be her dream home.
She loves treats but can be a little picky about the flavors. She loves to be petted and exploring new surroundings.
“She already knows how to load up in a vehicle or kennel,” said shelter staff. “She can get a little whiny when she’s in a kennel but only because she wants to be out interacting with everyone or wants to walk around.”

Neiko is healthy, spayed, vaccinated, and waiting for you at Windcrest Animal Care & Control. Visit them at 8601 Midcrown Drive, in Windcrest, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
There is no fee to adopt Neiko from the shelter, leaving you more money to spend on treats and toys.
For whoever adopts Neiko, Lucy’s Doggy Daycare & Spa will be lending a paw by offering them a free “Glow Up” Day at the Spa, which includes a massage therapy bath and Pawdicure. One of Lucy’s most cherished core values is to continue Lucy’s legacy of giving back to pups in need, as Lucy herself was a rescue!
For more information on adopting pets, please visit their website, or email them at Mcarrillo@windcrest-tx.gov.
If you’d like to donate to the shelter, they need leashes, collars and gently used blankets. You can drop them off at the shelter. The shelter says they would welcome more volunteers if you have the time, and would like to help care for the animals.
You can follow Windcrest Animal Control on Facebook.
Remember when you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives… the one you bring home with you and the one that now will be saved because the shelter has more room.
