New Braunfels burglary suspects tied to dozens of similar crimes in recent months

An email from detectives to a victimized business owner stated that all but one suspect believed to have targeted her shop are in custody.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas — New Braunfels police have served seven arrest warrants for four burglary suspects, according to an email from a detective sent to a local business owner.

Christina Layh owns the Baskin Robbins on Walnut Avenue. Her shop was broken into overnight on Jan. 3.

“When they called me in, I couldn’t initially come into the store,” Layh said. “All I could see was broken glass from the outside.  And then, after everybody left, I was finally able to come into the store. I smelled like cigarettes, there was glass everywhere, my things were on the floor.”

Over the weekend, Layh posted an email she received from one of the New Braunfels Police Department (NBPD) detectives working her case, letting her know they had served arrest warrants in connection to the burglary. According to the email, three of the suspects were already in custody in two county jails.

The fourth suspect, however, is still on the loose.

“Between the money that was stolen and the damages to our property, it was about $1,500,” Layh said. “My reaction was relief. I kind of wrote it off. I didn’t think we would ever catch them. And that was a little disheartening, a little fearful to know that maybe they’re still out there and there are probably other victims.”

The email stated the suspects were tied to dozens of burglaries between November and January.

“We’ve definitely changed our security measures,” Layh said. “We’ve, without saying too much, but we have definitely made sure that that same type of scenario won’t happen again here.”
